Brazilian women didn’t call it a “Brazilian”: that term was first used by a salon in Manhattan established in 1987 by Jocely, Jonice, Janea, Joyce, Jussara, Juracy and Judseia Padilha (collectively known as the “J Sisters” and originally from Vitória, a beach city north of Rio). The origins of the practice in Brazil may predate the coming of the Europeans. One of the earliest visitors, Péro Vaz de Caminha, wrote of the local Indians: “Their private parts were so exposed, so healthy and so hairless, that looking upon them we felt no shame.”
