 | An American band which actually didn't exist! Billy Joe and The Checkmates were just a bunch of studio musicians. Lew Bedell, the owner of Dore Records, suggested that they record a version of a Maxwell House advertising jingle. The record, "Percolator (Twist)", was credited to Billy Joe & The Checkmates and rose to no. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1962. UK issue of Dore 620 (USA 1961). Their 1st single.
